Victims of the Typhoid epidemic
This list is work in progress; if you know of someone who died of typhoid , I would very much appreciate being told, please fill in the online form. If you have a photograph, I would love to include that also. Some deaths were notified as deaths caused by diarrhoea, so it may not be possible to be certain. Reports in to the epidemic state that tragically 132 people died as a result of the outbreak, although newspaper reports from the time state 135. Relatives were helped financially and practically by grants from the relief fund; for mourning clothes, or for food for their families.
These names are taken from the public domain: newspapers, gravestones, lists of the deceased among the admission register of West Kent General Hospital, and information from descendants.
It was said in the papers that a large proportion were young adults; in their twenties; a large proportion were in their twenties of those buried in Sutton Road Cemetery during this period. However without cause of death it is not known which of these died from typhoid.
