Over twenty of the nurses were 'Londoners', all from the London Hospital. Nine were probationers who were at least mid-way through their two-year probation. The most famous is Edith Cavell, who had had previously had Fever Hospital Training; the others were: Constance Ashton, Caroline Mary Ball, Mary Susanna Davies, Annie Goodwin Croft Glover and Fanny Elizabeth Olney. Many thanks for the Archivists at The Royal London Hospital for helping me to solve this conundrum.
N.B. Two of this number are thought to be wrongly listed by the newspaper as being not of the corporation, and one has her initials around the wrong way. Another London Hospital porbationer has also been found in this list- she had previously trained elsewhere, but is listed in the 1903 Burdett's as a probationer at the London.
It is hoped to establish what proportion of the nurses were qualified, and also what proportion of the probationers and nurses had had any fever training.
It is not definate that the names below are the correct ones for the nurses listed, Burdett's Official Nursing Directories for 1898 and 1903 have been used, in order to try and identify the nurses. The 1903 edition of Burdett's, lists beside some of the nurses that they were awarded the Maidstone Typhoid Epidemic medal.
It is notable that many of these nurses were qualified nurses; many were also from several London agencies for private nurses at that time. Many nurses had had fever training. One nurse was awarded both the Isle of Wight Typhoid Medal, of which nine were awarded, and also received the Maidstone Medal, it is possible that another nurse also did so.
The two lists seem too have been blurred by the reporter at the time, perhaps accurate records were not kept, local dialects may have influenced how a name was heard and therefore spellings of surnames, and also non standardised spellings; for example the elusive Miss E.M. Cready was I think Miss Eleanor McReady! Please do contact me if you think that someone did get a medal and their name is not on this list, thanks.
I am happy to look up individual names for fellow researchers/family historians, please do contact me for further information.
