A.L Reeves, is thought to be Annie Laurie
Reeves, who entered the London Hospital, aged 27 as a probationer on October 25th
1889, she had been a children's maid previously.(1) Annie was born in
Harrietsham in 1862, in the 1891 census Annie is on the nursing staff at The London Hospital, and in
1901 and 1911 appears to be working as a Private Nurse, staying with her
patients. On December 19th 1891 Annie aged 29 started work as Nurse
Turner, after two years as staff nurse
she transferred to the Private Nursing Service
in February 1893 '...Chiefly on
account of her delicate health.'' (2) Annie worked as a member of the Private Nursing staff at
The London for two years, visiting homes across not just London but also further afield. On leaving the London Hospital Private Nursing Service Annie
had a favourable report; "Nurses Reeves
was always a favourite on the Private Staff. She had gentle nurse-like manner which made her a
great favourite with the patients and she showed real interest in her work. I was sorry when
she was persuaded by another hospital friend, to join the cooperation.''(3) Without finding Annie in records,( which may now not have
survived) it cannot yet be proved that it was the London Nurses Cooperation that Annie joined. However given that she was
living in London at the same time as this one was formed, and appears to have
been one of the London Corporation nurses sent to nurse at Maidstone in
1897-1898 during the Typhoid epidemic it seems a fair assumption, that Annie Laurie
Reeves and A.L. Reeves are the one and
same nurs

Kate Walton was born in Roughton, Grantham in 1860,her father was a farmer and she had three sisiters, Eliza Mary, Ada and Emily; Eliza 'Mary' also trained as a nurse and features in this web site: http://thecookes.moonfruit.com/sister-mary-walton/4579852819. she trained.

This medal, awarded to L. Heale, a nurse who was from the group not sent by the Corporation of London has a double story. In its box is a slip of paper, saying that it had been awarded to an E. Hogg, who is also on the list of nurses, but having been sent by the Corporation of London. So what is not clear is why it was awarded to one nurse, yet anothers names is attached with it.
Lilian Frances Mary Heale, was born on 6th November 1871 at Addington Rectory, 9 miles from Maidstone. Her father was the Vicar, and she was one of 11 or 12 children. Lilian trained as a nurse at West kent General Hospital, Maidstone deom 1895- 1898, so as a probationer nurse during the epidemic, seconded to the Isolation Hospital, working on night duty. After qualification she worked in a variety of places, including Great ormond Street, becoming a Princess Christian Reservist in 1899. In 1900 she moved to Cairo , working as a nurse for six years, whilst waiting to hear about her application to join Queen Alexandras Imperial Military Nursing Service for India. In 1906 she was appointed to QAIMNS(India) and joined one of her brothers who was serving in India. In November/ December1915 she was one of 14 nurses transferred to the British Military Expeditionary Force in Wimereux. Lilian married Henry 'Lionel' Cooper on December 6th 1917 in Bengal province, India. Lilian died in Canterbury in 1959.
E. Hogg appears to be Emily Susanah Hogg, who was born in the Isle of Wight in December registration quarter of 1866, and after training at
the Royal Hampshire County Hospital from March 1889 to March 1890 she appears to move to London and join the Nurse's Co-operation (like Annie Reeves). After working in Maidstone during the epidemic Emily served in South Africa as a nursing sister in No 9 Stationary Hospital
and is on the South Africa Medal Roll being issued with her medals on Ist January 1902..Emily worked as 'Hospital and Camp Matron(Transvaal)' (1). Emily would have appeared to transferred to QAIMNS, as she has a medal card at Kew for the Great War, working at the West General Hospital.(2) In 1931 Emily S Hogg dies at St Thomas Hospital, Lambeth, London, although her probate records state that:-
"HOGG-Emily Susannah of ...... Middlesex, spinster died 11 May 1931 on the way to ST Thomas Hospital Surrey." (3)
